The Shift - with companion Neil, furniture superstore, Emmaus Hull and East Riding.
[27 March 2018]
"Social enterprise is central to the Emmaus model, as it provides meaningful work for companions."
What other people may discard as worthless, what other other people may say is broken beyond repair, what other people may describe as no longer of use - Emmaus fixes and gives value to.
Neil, a companion resident at The Orchard - Emmaus Hull and East Riding's community and workshop on Lockwood Street Hull - welcomed me to his shift for one Friday in March 2018.
'Light' work only for me, as photojournalist, thank goodness. But for Neil, and his co-workers, a day of graft, learning, responsibility, and teamwork - what potential employer would not be impressed by the skills being developed here?
I leave the photographs to speak for themselves - and thank Neil for his patience, good humour, and conversation - as I photographed every moment of his working day.
