Rough Sleeper Support Service launched by Emmaus Hull & East Riding.

[19 June 2016]
Rough Sleeper Support Service at Emmaus Hull & East Riding
Emmaus Hull and East Riding have been funded to deliver outreach services and support to rough sleepers in the city and across the East Riding of Yorkshire. The 'Rough Sleeper Support Service' launches immediately and will see staff and companions out on the streets between 6am and 10pm daily.

The scheme, initially funded for 10 months by Hull City Council and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, has 1 full-time Co-ordinator who will be supported further by companions resident at The Orchard - Emmaus Hull & ER's building on Lockwood Street, Hull. The companions, all of whom have experienced homelessness directly before making The Orchard their home, are currently engaged in an intensive programme of training (First Aid, Safeguarding, Data Protection, Drugs Awareness etc) and bring a wealth of knowledge and passion to the peer-rich initiative.

The project's aim is to find and help the region's rough-sleepers, providing emergency support as necessary, and sign-posting people to further professional services such as Humbercare Ltd's Futures Assessment Centre in Hull or The Haven in Bridlington. The team will receive notifications regarding rough-sleepers from the national StreetLink service, and members of the public can also contact them directly with their concerns about people they have seen living on the streets - via a website link and telephone number.

In very recent years, both locally and nationally, there has been an increase in the number of people resorting to living and sleeping on the streets. Rough-sleeping places people in immediate danger, and reduces their overall life expectancy longer term. With access to professional services and information, engaging people with the right care and encouragement, it is hoped the numbers of people in the region rough-sleeping can be reduced.
David, Co-ordinator, Emmaus Hull & ER Rough Sleeper Support Service
Our experienced team will provide a life-line to those in the most desperate homeless situations. We can help directly with getting people out of danger, off the street, and into safe accommodation - where people will also be helped with other complex needs. No-one has to live or sleep on the streets.
David, Co-ordinator.
HumberHelp will be working very closely with the Emmaus Hull & ER Rough Sleeper Support Service, helping them to provide important information about the region's support organisations to the people they find on the streets.
